Dutiful But Dumb

The Stooges—Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard—work as paparazzi-like photographers for Whack Magazine, a publication famous for its sensationalist approach to imagery. After a failed attempt to capture a shot of the renowned movie star Percival De Puyster and his newlywed wife, their boss, Mr. Wilson, fires them on the spot. Yet Wilson soon sends the trio off to a distant land, Vulgaria, a fictional totalitarian regime that bears a clear wink to fascist Bulgaria, where photography is treated as espionage and carries the punishment of death.

Upon arriving in Vulgaria, the bumbling trio accidentally helps free another photographer who was doomed to be executed, a misstep that triggers their own capture by Vulgarian authorities. They are tossed into a Vulgarian prison and face imminent execution by firing squad. In a classic bit of comedic timing, Curly asks for a last cigarette and unveils an improbably long cigar, providing a moment of levity as the trio hides their heads inside their shirts to dodge the bullets.

The situation grows even more chaotic when they witness a demonstration of Vulgaria’s new ray gun, which the trio mistake for a camera. A string of slapstick mishaps follows as they try to turn the weapon to their advantage while avoiding the returning officers. At one point, Curly squeezes into a malfunctioning radio and bangs out a riotous, improvised tune on odd musical apparatus, adding to the pandemonium.

When the Stooges improvise and assume the appearances of Vulgarian officers, they stumble into a farcical confrontation in a nearby cafe. In this setting, Curly engages in a humorous showdown of wits with a live oyster nestled in his bowl of stew, a moment that showcases the group’s signature blends of wit and physical humor. Despite their persistence, the trio’s ruse is eventually uncovered by the vigilant guards, and they are hauled away in a surreal inversion—suspended by the bayonets of their captors’ rifles—dying to escape the escalating chaos.

Throughout the film, the sequence of mistaken identities, rapid-fire gags, and escalating escapades keeps the pace brisk, delivering a steady stream of visual humor, verbal banter, and physical comedy. The tone remains light and cheeky, leaning into the Stooges’ trademark timing as they navigate a foreign regime’s authoritarian quirks, all while tugging the plot forward with their misadventures and narrowly averted disasters.
