Set in Rome during the Marshall Plan, Ferdinando Esposito, [Totò], is a small-time crook who tries to keep his family afloat with a string of sly tricks. His partner in crime, Amilcare, [Aldo Giuffrè], convinces him to stage a guileful find—in this case, an ancient coin supposedly unearthed in the Roman Forum—and to target an American tourist who sits on the board of a charitable committee: Mr. Locuzzo, [William Tubbs]. The setup is simple, but the aim is bright enough to attract attention and a little greed, and the scheme hinges on fooling a powerful observer while keeping the scheme just under the radar of the law.

When the counterfeit scheme comes to light during a charity event that distributes gift packs, the scam is exposed and the chase begins. The pursuit erupts into a comic car ride, with the stout sergeant known as Bottoni, [Aldo Fabrizi], at the center of the cat-and-mouse game. At first, Bottoni can’t seem to trap the slippery Esposito; the thief slips through the net, and the officer ends up suspended from duty as a consequence of the incident and the fallout from Mr. Locuzzo’s complaint. The stakes rise quickly: Bottoni is given a three-month deadline to halt the thief, or he risks losing his job completely.

In a bid to salvage his career, Bottoni goes undercover, trading his official role for civilian clothes and a behind-the-scenes mission to track Esposito. He infiltrates the Esposito household, trying to win goodwill with the family by offering favors and food, all while keeping his true purpose hidden. What begins as a tense chase gradually softens into a surprising rapport: the two families slowly become acquainted, and a sense of mutual understanding grows between them. A delicate kalidescope of shared meals, small kindnesses, and the gradual blurring of lines creates a fragile bond that neither side fully intends to break.

The turning point arrives at a family meal where two worlds collide and the identities remain partly hidden from sight. Esposito, who is unaware of Bottoni’s true affiliation, gently calls into question the trust that has formed around the table, while Bottoni opens up about his own personal struggles and sense of duty. A kind of human complicity blossoms between them, and the dynamic unexpectedly shifts. The moment of truth looms as Esposito, wary yet principled, makes a drastic decision and takes a stand that could pull Bottoni into trouble: he chooses to bring Bottoni to justice, even as the sergeant—now more sympathetic than ever—hesitates.

To protect the fragile peace they’ve built and to spare their families from the fallout, the two men decide to keep the truth under wraps. They slip out together, letting everyone believe that Esposito has headed off on a routine business trip, while Bottoni accompanies him to the station. This ruse buys them time, but it also leaves Bottoni with a new, unsettled awareness of the Esposito family and the complicated loyalties that have grown between them. In the quiet that follows, Bottoni finds himself thinking deeply about the people behind the thefts and the lives they’re trying to lead, a reminder that the line between right and wrong can blur when human connections—however improbable—begin to form in the most unlikely places.
