Color Me Kubrick

As the sun sets, two clumsy thugs knock on the door of an unsuspecting elderly couple. They wave around a questionable debt notice supposedly from Stanley Kubrick, unaware that their target, the con artist Alan Conway, has already fled.

Alan Conway, the clever con artist, uses multiple identities to impersonate the reclusive film director Stanley Kubrick. He charms a young fashion designer with tales of cinematic brilliance and deceives others, such as a heavy metal band and a cab driver, into showering him with gifts.

While pretending to be Kubrick, Conway meets a savvy rent boy who quickly sees through his flimsy act. When Conway mistakenly claims he directed *Judgment at Nuremberg*, the rent boy corrects him, forcing Conway to retreat under the weight of his own deception.

In a local diner, Conway meets journalist Frank Rich and engages him in a heated argument over an article suggesting that Kubrick is a recluse. This encounter ignites Rich's determination to uncover the truth about the real Stanley Kubrick.

As Rich delves deeper into his investigation, he discovers a photograph of the real Stanley Kubrick. The sharp contrast between the photograph and Conway's appearance begins to unravel the con man's carefully crafted persona.

After a binge of alcohol, Conway collapses on a sun-drenched beach, leading to strange yet fortuitous encounters. A gentle nurse revives him, and he soon finds a new companion in Lee Pratt, who is unaware of Conway's true identity.

Conway charms Lee Pratt, a charming British singer and comedian, into believing that Conway can make him an international star. Pratt indulges Conway financially, unaware that he is funding a con artist's lavish lifestyle.

While staying at an upscale hotel, a cleaning woman discovers Conway's passport, exposing his real identity. This revelation raises doubts in Pratt's mind, leading Conway to be unceremoniously dropped from Pratt's life.

In a desperate bid to escape the consequences of his impostor lifestyle, Conway concocts a bold plan to impersonate Stanley Kubrick. He successfully secures a stay at a prestigious mental institution under this guise.

While in the mental institution, Conway convinces the attending doctor that he has recovered from a fictional mental breakdown. The doctor, intrigued, begins composing a case study for submission to a respected medical journal.

Conway manages to convince the staff of his recovery, leading to his release from the mental institution. However, the skeptical doctor ensures that he is instead admitted to the luxurious Rimini Clinic to address his alcoholism.

Inside the opulent Rimini Clinic, Conway indulges in a life of luxury alongside wealthy patients. He enjoys lavish spa treatments and serene hot tub experiences while avoiding any serious consequences for his past actions.

Conway's fortunate circumstances allow him to escape prosecution, ultimately leading to a quiet return to his modest flat in Harrow. This return signifies a strange end to his chaotic escapades as an imposter.

The chapter of Conway’s life comes to a close in December 1998, just three months before the death of Stanley Kubrick. The irony of his life serves as a vibrant reminder of the world of deception intertwined with reality.
