Detective Tak is corrupt and uses Il-young as payment for a loan he owes Mother. When Il-young is ten years old, he essentially trades her to Mother as settlement for his debt, turning a child over to a criminal organization without regard for her safety or future.

Mother recognizes Il-young's toughness and intelligence when she is ten years old. Rather than discarding her, Mother sees potential in the girl and decides to groom her as a useful asset. She trains Il-young in intimidation, negotiation, and the methods of the loan shark operation, molding her into her personal enforcer destined to inherit part of the criminal empire.

Suk-hyun is the first person Il-young encounters who speaks to her with genuine candor about his struggles rather than fearing her. His openness and humanity contrast sharply with the brutal world Mother has raised her in, creating an emotional connection that awakens feelings she has never experienced. Their interactions reveal shared pain and vulnerability beneath the debt collector-debtor dynamic.

When Suk-hyun's father flees without paying the debt, Mother views the situation as a failure that threatens her organization's reputation and control. She issues the order to kill Suk-hyun as a message about the consequences of unpaid debts, demonstrating ruthlessness to maintain power. The killing also includes organ harvesting, which serves the criminal operation's additional revenue streams.

Il-young hesitates when ordered to kill Suk-hyun because she has developed feelings for him, but she is ultimately powerless to stop the organization's actions. Mother's other goons carry out the killing regardless of Il-young's reluctance. The scene demonstrates how Il-young has no real power within the hierarchy despite her position, she is still just a weapon obeying her master's commands.

After Suk-hyun's death, Il-young fails another assignment and shows signs of disobedience by hesitating to kill. Mother punishes her by beating her and arranging to sell her into the Japanese sex trafficking trade. Il-young manages to escape from the transport facility where she was being prepared for the Japanese flesh trade. She escapes back toward the only people who ever showed her kindness, using her survival instincts and street knowledge to break free. This escape marks her turning point from victim to someone willing to confront the system that created her.

Il-young returns to confront Mother after escaping the flesh trade shipment. The showdown represents Il-young breaking free from the control and abuse she has suffered since childhood. She kills Mother not just for revenge, but as a necessary act to destroy the woman who shaped her into a weapon and to claim her own autonomy from the criminal empire.

The revelation comes during the final confrontation: Mother is Il-young's biological mother. She had abandoned Il-young as a baby in the coin locker at Western Seoul train station. Rather than revealing this truth, Mother chose to reclaim her daughter through the criminal network, raising her as a cold heir to the empire. This twist reframes all of Mother's "training" as a twisted form of preparing her daughter for leadership.

After killing Mother and learning the truth about her origins, Il-young inherits the organization. The film suggests she accepts this dark legacy as her only viable path, having been groomed for it her entire life and now possessing the skills and ruthlessness required. The ending shows her stepping into Mother's role, choosing survival and power within the only world she knows, even at the cost of her remaining humanity.
