The film begins in 1950s Ireland, showcasing the childhood of Benny, Eve, and Nan during their first Communion. Benny is depicted as the beloved only child, while Eve, an orphan raised by nuns, and Nan, who despite her poverty is acknowledged for her beauty, are introduced as her closest friends.

Six years have passed as the girls embark on their new adventures. While Nan has moved ahead to university, Benny and Eve prepare for their own transitions, with Benny facing daily treks to Dublin due to her parents' reluctance to let her go.

Eve's education is funded by a wealthy Protestant family, generous benefactors due to her deceased father's past employment. This support includes a cottage on their estate, setting the stage for future events in their lives.

In Dublin, the girls reunite, where Benny meets Jack Foley, a charming rugby player with aspirations of becoming a doctor. Their initial attraction flourishes as they navigate their aspirations and relationships in the vibrant city.

Following the unexpected death of Benny's father, she is compelled to leave her studies to help her grieving mother manage their family business. This hardship is coupled with Sean Walsh's persistent advances, pressuring her for a future together.
