Set in Vienna in 1906, Franz Lobheiner falls passionately for the young Christine while still involved with the married Baroness von Eggersdorf. When the baron discovers his wife's infidelity, he challenges Lobheiner to a duel, though the rivalry has lost its urgency as Franz’s heart now belongs solely to Christine. The tangled emotions of this love quartet drive the story toward an uncertain resolution.
