Rudolf, the sole heir of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria‑Hungary, finds himself bound to a barren marriage with a Belgian princess. Seeking escape from his oppressive court, he encounters the alluring Maria, and the two ignite a forbidden romance. Even as the Emperor tries to intervene, the pair remain steadfast, refusing to abandon one another.
