After the first film, a toy manufacturer rebuilds the murderous doll Chucky to restore the brand’s image. Chucky's reassembly and resurrection

Two years after Chucky's death, the Play Pals corporation recovers his remains to reassure stockholders there's nothing wrong with the Good Guy dolls. They reassemble him, hoping to reveal nothing amiss. A power surge on the line fatally electrocutes an assembly worker and revives Chucky. The company CEO, Mr. Sullivan, orders his assistant Mattson to dispose of the doll.

Andy enters foster care

Eight-year-old Andy Barclay has been in foster care since his mother was institutionalized for claiming his doll was alive. He is placed with Phil and Joanne Simpson and meets Kyle, a cynical teenage girl they also foster. Andy and Kyle begin to bond after a shared punishment for an heirloom that Chucky destroys.

Chucky uses Mattson's car phone to locate Andy and reaches Grace Poole, the manager of the foster center, signaling his intent to act. After the call, he fatally suffocates Mattson with a plastic bag. The stage is set for the doll to move freely among the living.
