The film follows Maria, devoted wife of a bank clerk who lives comfortably while their baby is cared for by a maid, freeing her for shopping. A chance reunion with old friend Lidia brings her into elite circles, attracting the wealthy libertine Lebedev. She endures sexual harassment, resisting at first but ultimately falls into his bourgeois grip.
