Ed starts to suspect that her death was not a straightforward tubercular hemorrhage, but the result of something more sinister.

The police declare the cause of death as tubercular hemorrhage, but Ed remains unconvinced. He resolves to read more deeply into Rosita's diary and to talk to the people who might have known her. The idea of a mob-connected killer suddenly seems plausible to him.

Ed tracks down Solly Wellman, G. G. Temple, and Belle Dorset, asking for explanations about Rosita. All three deny any knowledge of her, and Belle Dorset even moves away from her home after the inquiries. Ed treats the diary as his only reliable link to Rosita's world.

At a party, Ed meets Leona Purdy, a beautiful blonde who says she knew Rosita. Ed and Leona quickly begin dating, and Leona paints Rosita in a sympathetic light, contrasting with the sensational spin in the press. The relationship deepens as Ed's investigation presses on.

Ed's suspicions intensify as Wellman and Temple threaten him, suggesting Rosita's circle is dangerous. He recalls Rosita's alleged mistreatment and worries that someone may have wanted her silence. The danger feels personal as threats escalate.

Tommy Ditman recounts Rosita's past: she ran away from Amarillo at seventeen, fell in love with Paul Jean d'Ur, and married him in New York. Paul died in a car accident, leaving Rosita lonely and unable to hold a steady job. This backstory helps Ed understand the vulnerability that followed Rosita.

Gangster Blacky Franchot arranges to talk with Ed about Rosita, but Blacky is shot before Ed can arrive. Before dying, Blacky murmurs that he loved Rosita, implying a tangled history. Ed immediately reports the incident to city editor Gribbe, whose column paints Rosita's life as sensational and mysterious.

Ed reports to Gribbe, the city editor, who writes a long column sensationalizing Rosita's life and fate. The piece casts her as mysterious and morally ambiguous, influencing public perception. Ed begins to question how Rosita's story is being spun in the press.

Leona reveals Rosita had been involved with Blacky and that she feared his connections to Wellman. She also notes Rosita resisted Temple's advances. After Blacky is beaten, they move to the countryside, but when Blacky leaves her, Rosita returns to Chicago and begins dating Temple.

Ed confronts Temple, accusing him of ordering Blacky's beating; Temple denies it. Interfering police detective Anstruder tags along as Ed pursues Rosita's history, including a meeting with Hotspur Shaner. The pursuit grows tenser as danger closes in.

Hazel, Rosita's former maid, tells Ed that Rosita left Temple after he struck her a year before her death. The honesty underscores a fragile relationship and a reason Rosita might have left him. This adds another layer to the motive behind Rosita's death.

Ed and Leona attend a boxing match featuring the last names listed in Rosita's diary: Bat Bennett and Jerry Cavanaugh. Jerry reveals Bat fell in love with Rosita, and that Wellman pressured her to end the relationship. Rosita subsequently disappeared, leaving the case unresolved.

Temple is murdered, and Wellman is suspected of involvement. Belle Dorset reveals that Wellman had hired Spingler to get rid of Rosita, tying the death to a broader criminal plot. The web of connections between Rosita's death and Wellman's rackets grows clearer.

Wellman shoots and wounds Ed, but Ed survives and ultimately corners Wellman in a parking garage, where he kills Wellman. The climactic confrontation resolves the primary criminal thread surrounding Rosita's death. Ed's pursuit of truth ends with a fatal act of justice.

At Rosita's funeral, Ed tells Tommy what really happened to his sister, exposing the truth behind the sensational rumors. He then burns Rosita's diary in the funeral parlor's eternal flame, symbolically sealing Rosita's story and his investigation. The truth comes at a personal cost, ending Ed's quest with closure and tragedy.
