Piyal, a teacher, is hired to teach English to Nanda, from a wealthy family, and they fall in love despite class differences. Nanda’s parents force her to marry Jinadasa. An economic crisis strips families of status; Jinadasa leaves to find work, yet dies penniless. After his death they reunite, but years have changed them and the idyll is gone.
