The film concludes with Victoria, the film’s main heroine, witnessing the Jellicle Cats gather for their annual ritual. She sees the cats competing for the honor of being chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer—a sort of feline heaven where they are reborn into a new life. After a series of musical performances by various candidates, Macavity, played by Idris Elba, kidnaps several of the contenders in an attempt to manipulate the outcome in his favor, even trying to influence Old Deuteronomy’s decision. Luckily, Victoria’s fellow cat Mr. Mistoffelees rescues Old Deuteronomy, allowing the selection process to proceed fairly. In the end, it is Grizabella, the once-glamorous but now outcast cat played by Jennifer Hudson, who is chosen. She sings her heartfelt rendition of “Memory,” a song that marks her emotional journey from disgrace to redemption. As she is called to ascend, she rides a chandelier attached to a hot air balloon towards the Heaviside Layer—symbolizing her passage into the next stage of existence. Meanwhile, Macavity tries one last daring escape by latching onto a rope from the chandelier but falls and ends up stuck on top of Nelson’s Column, effectively trapped and unable to interfere further. The scene underscores that her journey is a spiritual rebirth, leaving her past behind and moving toward a new life. The Heaviside Layer itself is a real atmospheric layer where radio signals are reflected back to Earth, but in the story, it serves as a metaphysical realm representing heaven or the next stage in a cat’s afterlife. Overall, the film’s ending blends surreal imagery with symbolic themes of redemption, sacrifice, and transformation, even if the story’s bizarre and convoluted journey makes the conclusion feel both strange and bittersweet.
