Fresh from prison, ex‑con Ugo Piazza encounters his former boss, the sadistic gangster Rocco, who delights in cruelty. Both criminals and police suspect Ugo of hoarding $300,000 meant for an American drug‑lord. The film opens Di Leo’s “Milieu” trilogy of poliziotteschi, later continued by “The Italian Connection” (1972) and “The Boss” (1973).

He vehemently denies the theft, even under coercion from The Americano's volatile right-hand man, Rocco. Nelly and the police commissario also suspect him, pressuring him to cooperate.
