In the vibrant cityscape of New York, a rich cultural tapestry woven with Asian threads sets the stage for the heartfelt journey of Anran and Yongyuan. Their lives first intertwined in 1982 when Anran transfers to Yongyuan’s school, bringing an air of sophistication that makes her stand out among her classmates, who regard her with both suspicion and curiosity.

Yongyuan, a dedicated companion, embraces his role as Anran’s shadow and holds this position for two decades. His unwavering loyalty shines through, demonstrated by his remarkable ability to identify the sound of her footsteps, showcasing the depth of their relationship. United by the shared tragedy of losing their mothers in a devastating earthquake, Anran and Yongyuan find solace in one another, creating a bond that becomes their emotional refuge.

However, fate has different plans. After Yongyuan’s guardian passes away, his uncle takes him away abruptly, severing their connection yet again. This cycle of separation becomes a recurring theme in their lives, forcing both Anran and Yongyuan to navigate the complexities of their futures alone.

A decade later, Yongyuan returns to Beijing, only to experience the joy of being reunited with Anran, now portrayed as a determined pre-med student by Gao Yuanyuan. Her evolution from a teenager to a young adult is marked by an emerging sense of purpose. Meanwhile, Yongyuan, played by Nicholas Tse, has transformed significantly, his journey leading him into the shadows of dubious dealings, all with the aim of securing Anran’s educational aspirations.

As Anran prepares to embark on her journey to Columbia University, Yongyuan disappears yet again, leaving her to carve out her own path. In the bustling streets of Manhattan, she becomes romantically involved with Michael, a temperamental painter whose fire for art is matched only by his possessiveness.

In the meantime, Yongyuan has amassed a fortune solely to track down Anran, culminating in a serendipitous discovery of her presence through Michael’s artwork. Their nostalgic reunion is infused with warm memories, but alas, their love remains irrevocably fractured, facing separation once more.
