In 1967 Hong Kong, three childhood friends, tightly bound by their gang past, navigate a world where loyalty and danger walk hand in hand. As life takes a personal turn, Ben becomes engaged to his girlfriend Jane, and Frank takes out a loan to cover the wedding reception. After the wedding, a retaliatory attack on Ringo sets off a chain of events that changes the trio’s fate forever: in a moment of reckless impulsivity, Frank ends up killing Ringo, and the group realizes they must flee Hong Kong to avoid law enforcement.

Driven by a mix of fear and a desire for a fresh start, the friends decide to seek fortune beyond their borders. Their plan leads them toward Vietnam, where they believe the ongoing conflict has created a lucrative black market for smuggling. They secure a heavy load of contraband goods from a seasoned Hong Kong smuggler and commit to delivering it to a Vietnamese gangster named Leong. Their voyage takes them by boat toward Saigon, a journey that begins with a fragile optimism but soon buckles under the brutal realities of war-torn Southeast Asia. The moment Saigon seems within reach, fate intervenes in a spectacular and devastating way: a Vietcong suicide bombing destroys their cargo, an attack intended to target an army officer rather than the smugglers, and the men are arrested as suspects, beaten, and forced to endure the humbling indignities of being questioned and mistreated.

In prison, the men meet Luke, a hitman who works for Leong, and they learn of Sally, a nightclub singer whom Leong has kidnapped and forced into prostitution. Luke’s world-weary pragmatism contrasts with their stubborn hope for escape, and together with Sally’s perilous situation, a daring plan to save her takes shape. The rescue attempt spirals into a violent nightclub confrontation where the violence suddenly feels personal and immediate. Amid the chaos, Paul discovers a hidden box of gold in Leong’s office and seizes it, believing the wealth could secure their survival. They manage to flee the club, but Sally is mortally wounded, shot in the back as they hurry toward safety.

The next morning finds them waiting by a river for a boat that will carry them to safety, but the fragile balance they’ve built begins to crumble. Ben and Frank keep a protective eye on Sally, while Paul clutches the gold with a growing fixation. When gangsters and ARVN forces attack as the boat arrives, Sally dies just as she boards, and Luke quietly lets her body drift away. The vessel’s engine fails, trapping them in a mired escape. In a concerted display of resolve, Paul claims to work for the CIA in a bid to save the others, while Frank is forced to execute fellow prisoners, an act that haunts him deeply. Though the odds are stacked against them, a stroke of luck arrives in the form of an American rescue squad led by Luke, who arrives just in time to aid their escape.

The escape is not clean or painless. Paul makes it to safety with the gold, while Frank, wounded, follows in a desperate bid for survival. He is urged to remain quiet, but his fear manifests in loud, uncontrolled screams, and Paul makes a fatal choice, shooting Frank in the back to end his torment. Ben confronts Paul, showing him Frank’s skull and demanding accountability for the cascade of suffering that followed their shared choices. Paul responds with cold indifference, pushing Ben away.
