Bullet Stein is released on parole after serving eight years for being an accomplice to a robbery. He immediately resumes crime, joining with his friend Lester to rob two teenagers for drugs and he also robs drug runner Flaco, stabbing him in the eye. He tells Flaco to relay his return to Tank, the boss he must answer to.

Bullet returns to Brooklyn to live with his dysfunctional family—a drunk father, a depressed mother, and his brothers Louis and Ruby. The house is tense with unspoken resentments and the weight of their past. He keeps his edge by slipping back into petty robberies and old contacts in the underworld.

Tank, Bullet's old adversary and a local drug kingpin, wants revenge and pressures Paddy to locate and deliver Bullet to him.
