The investigation isolates Martha even more, and she begins to exhibit signs of desperation—pawned jewelry (claimed as inheritance), spending on fishing gear and a beauty-parlor trip, and a gift of the fishing gear to Kyle, who seems surprised by the news of Rose’s death. When the detective later reveals that the fingerprints found on Rose’s neck match Martha’s, she is arrested, her world tipping into a terrifying and irreversible arc.

In prison, Martha’s fear and uncertainty intensify as Kyle visits. She pleads with him to believe in her innocence, insisting she didn’t kill Rose and offering whatever explanation she can, even as she mentions a headache and Rose’s rudeness as possible motives or triggers. Kyle remains skeptical, torn between the memory of his troubling night with Rose and the possibility that Martha could truly be innocent. The tension and unresolved questions hang in the air as the legal process unfolds.

Inside her jail cell, Martha experiences a brief, unsettling vision: a bright light floods the room, followed by the image of Rose’s lifeless body and Martha standing over her. The dreamlike moment deepens the mystery and complicates any certainty about who is responsible. In the aftermath of these events, Kyle’s life settles back into its quiet, routine rhythm, with his mother taking over Rose’s job at the doll factory and Kyle continuing to work two ordinary, unglamorous jobs. The story closes on a note of steady monotony, leaving the audience with a sense of unfinished threads and unresolved guilt, even as the world around Kyle and Martha continues to churn in its familiar way.
