Jamie is the getaway driver for a gang of robbers, but when the heist goes wrong he escapes by car and then by train to Welford, a quiet rural village in Devon, where his estranged uncle, Kit, lives alone. Although Kit is not thrilled to see him, he allows him to stay for a couple of days.
A couple of days’ stopover quickly stretches into an open-ended stay, as Jamie, sneering at Kit’s rural life, finds a job at the local garage and eats Kit out of house and home. Tension grows as the arrangement tests Kit’s endurance and the peace of his home.
Things worsen when Jamie’s estranged wife Linda arrives, hoping for reconciliation; though Kit is wary of another unwanted guest at first, Linda proves more amenable than Jamie, whose attention soon drifts to Betty, a single woman in the village with whom he begins an affair.
Jamie is caught stealing from Kit as well as the garage, and when Linda confronts him he assaults her, and she kills him accidentally in an act of self-defense. Kit and Linda decide to hide the body, a decision that unexpectedly brings them closer, and after telling the few people who are interested that Jamie has left the farm, life resumes as before with Kit and Linda having fallen in love.
Linda remains haunted by memories of Jamie, and the situation grows grimmer when Jamie’s mother Eva arrives unexpectedly to see Jamie. Linda starts to unravel, and the local doctor is called to help, becoming suspicious of Linda’s condition and actions, and he alerts the police. The police arrive and search for Jamie’s body but cannot find it, and are about to leave when Linda’s conscience wins out and she calls them back to the house, presumably to make a complete confession, with Kit by her side.

Stories where the cover-up is more agonizing than the crime itself. If you liked the tense, internal struggle in Guilt Is My Shadow, explore more movies where characters are haunted by a crime. These similar dramas focus on the psychological aftermath and moral deterioration following a cover-up, creating a heavy, melancholic viewing experience.
These narratives typically follow a linear path: a crime is committed, often under duress, and is subsequently hidden. The plot then shifts focus from the act itself to the intense psychological pressure and paranoia of maintaining the secret. The character's emotional state deteriorates steadily under the burden of conscience, leading toward a climax of confession or breakdown.
Movies are grouped here because they share a core focus on the internal experience of guilt rather than the procedural aspects of crime. They create a similar mood of claustrophobic dread through steady pacing, heavy emotional weight, and a bleak or sad conclusion that emphasizes the inescapable nature of a troubled conscience.
Quiet, confined worlds where tension builds with every passing day.Fans of the tense, confined atmosphere in Guilt Is My Shadow will appreciate these similar movies. Discover more stories where a quiet village or remote location becomes a trap, building steady dread as characters hide dark secrets from their neighbors, resulting in a heavy, anxious vibe.
These stories often begin with an outsider or a resident introducing a disruptive secret into a seemingly placid environment. The narrative unfolds deliberately, using the confined space to amplify paranoia and interpersonal tensions. The pacing is steady, focusing on the gradual erosion of normalcy and the suffocating fear that the walls, both literal and social, are closing in.
These films are grouped together based on their shared atmospheric quality. The combination of a secluded setting, a steady, deliberate pace, and a consistently tense tone creates a specific kind of viewing experience defined by building unease and a feeling of being trapped with one's own anxieties or crimes.
