Breathless

A cocky drifter in Las Vegas steals a Porsche intending to drive to Los Angeles. He pockets the handgun he finds in the glovebox as he speeds away. He darts through a highway construction block and is soon pursued by a patrolman, setting the film's deadly escape in motion.

The pursuing officer orders him to exit the car, but Lujack panics and fires through the back window, fatally wounding the patrolman. Realizing what he's done, he abandons the vehicle and flees on foot. The incident permanently marks him as a wanted man.

After the shooting, Lujack feels a wave of remorse and covers the dying patrolman's head with his coat before slipping away. He vanishes into the night, leaving the crime scene behind. The escape signals the start of his stay in a city he can't yet leave behind.

Lujack arrives in Los Angeles to a city already buzzing with chatter about the 'cop killer.' His image appears across newspapers and TV reports, making him instantly recognizable. He stays in the city while planning to be paid for a previous car theft.

With no safe place to hide, Lujack breaks into Monica Poiccard's apartment and waits for her return. She discovers him naked in her bed, initially alarmed and reluctant to engage with him. The intrusion kickstarts a volatile, magnetic attraction between them.

Monica confronts the intruder and the tension between them thickens as she initially declines his advances. Yet their chemistry lingers, and they begin a cautious, charged dynamic. The situation places Monica in a dangerous, morally complicated romance.

Despite her initial reluctance, Monica ends up having sex with Lujack in the shower. The physical connection deepens, even as fear about their future persists. The moment mixes longing with the reality of their precarious situation.

Lujack presses Monica to run away to Mexico, but she remains hesitant about abandoning her life. He then barges onto her UCLA campus during a presentation, intruding on her work and triggering irritation from professors. The disruption intensifies the strains on their relationship.

Over time, Monica lapses back into Lujack's orbit, succumbing to his charm again even as she doubts the viability of their plan. The romance clings to a dangerous fantasy while the reality of danger closes in. Their bond becomes increasingly unstable.

Lujack's photo reappears in the press as he drops Monica off at a downtown groundbreaking ceremony. The police begin questioning Monica, but she refuses to identify him at first. The scrutiny tightens the net around them and tests Monica's loyalties.

Under mounting pressure, Monica finally agrees to flee with Lujack to Mexico. They attempt to reclaim a shared dream of escape, even as the odds stack against them. The decision marks a new, fragile chapter in their relationship.

On the road out of LA, they stop so Lujack can repair a stolen car. Monica walks to a nearby store and discovers her own image alongside Lujack's in the newspaper. Realizing the romance is doomed, she phones the police before returning to where he waits.

Lujack asks Monica if she loves him, and she answers no. He retorts with a scathing 'liar,' exposing the emotional fracture in their relationship. The moment crystallizes the impossibility of their bond.

Lujack runs to meet an accomplice who has the payment for the previous theft and who tosses a gun to him. He refuses to take it, but the police corner him on the road as he dances around the gun and sings 'Breathless' to Monica. The scene ends in a freeze-frame as he faces the police with the weapon in reach.
