Joe Bell (John Garfield) endures a harsh and unjust fate after he is sentenced to 16 months in prison for a burglary he did not commit, a punishment that leaves him bitter and disillusioned. His journey to redemption and peace is tumultuous, filled with unexpected alliances, risky escapes, and moments of genuine human connection.
The story begins with Joe riding in a boxcar alongside two brothers, seeking any means to escape his bleak circumstances. During this ride, he gets into a confrontation with a thief (uncredited Ward Bond), which results in Joe being sentenced to a 90-day stay at a work farm. While at the farm, he befriends Priscilla Lane’s character, Mabel Alden. Their friendship sparks tension with Charles Garreth (Stanley Ridges), who is both Mabel’s stepfather and the foreman of the farm. This tension culminates in a physical altercation where Joe knocks Garreth out, prompting panic among them. Fearing repercussions, the young couple makes the drastic decision to flee and ultimately get married.
However, tragedy strikes when they discover that Garreth has died and that Joe is now wanted for his murder. This revelation forces Joe and Mabel to continue their flight across state lines, desperately trying to elude the law. Still unaware that Joe has been formally charged with Garreth’s death, the couple goes into a stage show marriage, making plans to start anew, with hopes of winning a house and enjoying a fresh start. Their plans are shattered when they hear on the radio about a manhunt for Joe, prompting them to dash away from their temporary life and seek refuge elsewhere.
In their new town, they encounter Nick (Henry Armetta), a kindly restaurant owner who sympathizes with their plight. He offers them work at his restaurant, and for a time, they enjoy a semblance of normalcy. Despite their efforts to stay under the radar, the local police, who often frequent little Nick’s establishment, grow suspicious of them. Joe manages to evade arrest, but Mabel is captured. Demonstrating his loyalty and love, Joe teams up with Nick to stage a daring jailbreak, freeing Mabel from custody.
Their constant movement to escape the law finally leads Joe to a pivotal moment. While in the right place at the right time, he witnesses a bank robbery and takes photographs of the criminals. These photos become crucial, helping Joe secure a job as a photographer at a local newspaper run by Alan Hale. As he builds a new life, Joe’s past comes back to haunt him—the gang leader from the robbery attempts to seize the negatives, risking Joe’s safety. In a heroic act, Joe saves newspaper owner Mike Leonard’s life, but the incident also results in Joe’s photograph appearing on newspaper front pages, making him a wanted man once again.
Faced with mounting danger, Joe considers fleeing once more, but Mabel, distressed and desperate to do what’s right, turns him into the authorities. Despite her heartbreaking decision, she believes that honesty is the only true path. At the trial, Joe’s character witnesses speak highly of him, attempting to clear his name. The prosecution hands the jury a compelling case, but Moroni Olsen’s character, Slim Jones, the defense attorney, calls Mabel to testify. Her heartfelt testimony sways the jury, ultimately convincing them of Joe’s innocence and bringing their ordeal towards a tentative hope for a fresh start.
Throughout his journey, Joe Bell’s struggles highlight themes of injustice, redemption, and the enduring power of love and integrity amid adversity. His story is one of perseverance, even when faced with overwhelming odds, reminding viewers of the importance of truth and the complexities of human morality.
