The book behind the movie

Breath

by Tim Winton

Simon Baker's film directly follows Pikelet and Loonie into Sando's surfing apprenticeship, escalating breaks, rivalry for approval, Sando's absences, Eva's history and dangerous relationship with Pikelet, and the adult narrator's attempt to understand what followed. Winton co-wrote the screenplay, which condenses the framing life and internal reflection while giving the ocean's physical scale immediate force. The novel remains more explicit about breath, shame, risk, and the ordinary adult existence that must absorb an adolescence organized around exceptional danger.
