What Happens in Brannigan: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Brannigan (1975) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Tough Chicago Police Lieutenant Jim Brannigan, John Wayne, is sent to London to extradite a notorious American mobster, Ben Larkin, Ralph Meeker. Brannigan is tasked with working alongside the local officer, Detective-Sergeant Jennifer Thatcher, Judy Geeson, to help during his stay in the British capital. But before Brannigan can collect his man, Larkin is unexpectedly kidnapped.

Larkin’s finger is cut off and mailed to the police to prove how serious the kidnappers are. The mobster’s lawyer, Mel Fields, Mel Ferrer, tries to arrange a ransom drop while Brannigan makes his way around London in search of Larkin. As Brannigan navigates the city, he grapples with adapting to the British way of life and the more restrained style of policing, yet he employs techniques not usually seen in Britain, bringing a distinctly American edge to the investigation.

Meanwhile, a contract has already been put out on Brannigan’s life by Larkin, so a hitman named Gorman tails Brannigan in a black Jaguar E-Type, executing several attempts to kill him and nearly shooting Thatcher by mistake. Metropolitan Police Commander Charles Swann, John Vernon, is in charge of helping get Larkin back to America, and he brings a blunt pragmatism to the operation, willing to get his hands dirty despite his upper-class demeanor. There is continual friction between Brannigan and Swann over the use and possession of the American’s .38 Colt Diamondback revolver, highlighting the clash between two policing cultures.

Fields is allowed to proceed with the ransom delivery on his own and he ultimately eliminates the kidnapper cell. He and Larkin celebrate the success of their scheme to take the money, with Larkin casually calling the severed finger a small price to pay for the payoff. Brannigan bursts in to foil their plans, and as he and Thatcher walk away from the aftermath, Gorman attempts to mow them down with his car. Brannigan responds decisively, shooting Gorman, and with the threat neutralized, he can finally return home to Chicago.

Brannigan Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Brannigan (1975): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Brannigan sent to London instead of having Larkin extradited directly?

Brannigan is sent to London to personally escort Larkin back to Chicago for prosecution. While extradition procedures exist, the film establishes that American authorities prefer having one of their own officers physically bring the prisoner back, giving them more control over the transfer and ensuring the criminal doesn't slip through legal loopholes.

Foreshadowing: The opening establishes Brannigan as a tough, hands-on cop who prefers direct action over bureaucratic procedures.

Q2

Who kidnapped Larkin and why was his finger cut off?

Larkin's own lawyer Mel Fields orchestrates the kidnapping as part of a ransom scheme. The severed finger is sent to prove to police that the kidnappers are serious and willing to use extreme violence, raising the ransom stakes. In reality, Fields and Larkin are working together to extort money from the police while making it look like a genuine kidnapping.

Q3

Is Mel Fields really Larkin's lawyer or is he part of the crime?

Mel Fields appears to be Larkin's lawyer but is actually his criminal accomplice. He uses his legal position to arrange the ransom drop and gain access to the police operation. Once alone with the actual kidnappers, Fields eliminates them and celebrates with Larkin, revealing the entire kidnapping was a scheme to steal the ransom money.

Foreshadowing: Fields' insistence on handling the ransom delivery alone raises suspicion early in the investigation.

Q4

Why does Commander Swann oppose Brannigan's use of firearms?

Swann represents the more restrained British policing approach, where officers typically carry less lethal weapons and rely on procedural methods. Brannigan's .38 Colt Diamondback revolver represents the more aggressive American style of law enforcement. Swann's opposition highlights the cultural clash between the two policing philosophies throughout the film.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early on that Brannigan is a tough Chicago cop who relies on his weapon and instincts.

Q5

Who is Gorman and why is he trying to kill Brannigan?

Gorman is a professional hitman hired by Ben Larkin, who puts a contract on Brannigan's life to prevent his extradition. Larkin arranges the hit before the kidnapping scheme even unfolds, making Brannigan a target from the moment he arrives in London. Gorman follows Brannigan in a black Jaguar E-Type and makes multiple assassination attempts throughout the film.

Q6

How does Brannigan figure out the ransom scheme?

Brannigan pieces together the真相 by remaining persistent and using his street-level investigative instincts. He follows the breadcrumb clues across London, questioning suspects and pushing against British procedures. His unorthodox methods allow him to intercept the ransom drop and discover that Fields and Larkin orchestrated the entire kidnapping for financial gain.

Foreshadowing: Brannigan's refusal to follow British procedure exactly leads him to uncover the truth.

Q7

What happens to Larkin at the end of the movie?

Brannigan bursts in and foils Fields' ransom scheme before the criminals can escape with the money. The confrontation collapses their plan, and Larkin is presumably taken back into custody for extradition to Chicago. The film ends with Brannigan having successfully completed his mission and defeating both the criminals and the hitman Gorman.

Q8

How does Brannigan defeat the hitman Gorman?

After foiling the ransom plan, Brannigan and Thatcher walk away from the scene when Gorman makes a final attempt to kill them by ramming his car toward them. Brannigan responds quickly, shooting Gorman dead before the hitman can complete the attack. This decisive action eliminates the remaining threat and allows Brannigan to return home to Chicago.

Q9

How does Brannigan's relationship with Jennifer Thatcher develop?

Brannigan and Thatcher start with significant friction due to his unorthodox American methods clashing with British police procedures. However, as they work together to track down Larkin and survive Gorman's assassination attempts, they develop mutual respect. By the end, their partnership is solid enough that they work seamlessly together, with Thatcher supporting Brannigan's aggressive approach.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes their initial clash immediately upon Brannigan's arrival.
