At the Neurology Institute, Marc Singer and David Kagen study brain responses to sexual and non-sexual stimuli, observing how cognition and emotion intertwine under their careful scrutiny. The environment is clinical, but a new energy arrives with Lisa Pescia, an expert in the biology of aggression whose provocative research proposal captures the attention of their boss, Joseph Campanella.

While Tom is married to Marlee, Mary Crosby as Marlee, Claire seduces him during a late-night lab session, and their affair rapidly escalates. Tom tries to keep the relationship hidden, yet Claire grows more possessive and manipulative, weaving herself into both his professional world and his personal life, pushing him toward deeper lies as she pressures him to continue the liaison.

When Tom attempts to end things, Claire responds with escalating psychological warfare. She ships disturbing packages to his home, records their encounters, and threatens his career and family. Her fixation becomes dangerous: she appears unannounced, coerces him into further sexual encounters, and begins invading his family’s space—even sending a sex tape disguised as a children’s video to Tom’s young son. Tom’s desperation erupts into a violent outburst, which only strengthens Claire’s conviction that their shared “chemistry” is inescapable.

As Tom and Marlee’s marriage deteriorates, Claire boldly inserts herself into their social circle, culminating in her arrival at a celebratory dinner party as Freddie Summers’ date. The tension reaches a breaking point when Marlee overhears Tom threatening Claire, realizes he has been lying for months, and orders him out of the house.

That night, Claire returns, sets a fire, and plunges the family into chaos. Tom confronts her, but the confrontation ends with Claire shooting him and later claiming he was a dangerous, obsessive lover who refused to end the affair. When the police leave, Claire collapses in private grief.
