Read the complete plot breakdown of Blue Cat Blues (1956), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Tom Paul Frees is seen sitting on train tracks, deeply despondent as an oncoming train seems ready to end his pain, while Jerry laments his friend’s state and recalls how they became friends in the first place. Through Jerry’s narration, we learn that Tom and Jerry were once inseparable, until Tom falls for a beautiful white cat who, at first, appears to share his feelings. Yet behind her charm lies manipulation, and she ultimately leaves Tom for Butch, a mouse noted for his extraordinary wealth. This revelation confirms Jerry’s growing suspicions: the cat is a gold digger who cares more for status and affluence than for Tom’s affection.

Despite Jerry’s pleas, Tom fights to win her back, wasting no opportunity to lavish her with gifts. He first brings her a flower, only to learn she has already received a stunning horseshoe garland of roses from Butch. When Tom presents a bottle of perfume, Butch arrives with an entire tanker truck packed with perfume, dwarfing Tom’s gesture. Desperation drives Tom to drain his life savings and purchase a diamond ring for her, but the ring ends up seeming trivial next to Butch’s—so large and brilliant that she would need welding helmets to glimpse it. In a final blow, Tom takes out a predatory loan from a used-car lot to buy an old, rickety automobile, while Butch cruises up in a long, fancy convertible, making Tom’s ride look pathetic by comparison.

Overwhelmed by heartache, Tom turns to milk as a solace, ignoring Jerry’s attempts to intervene. His decline nearly carries him into the gutter, but Jerry pulls him back just in time. The situation glosses over into further despair when Butch and the white cat drive by in Butch’s car, proudly displaying a “JUST MARRIED” sign on the back. As the flashback ends, Jerry kisses a picture of his girlfriend before she drives past—having married a wealthy mouse. Heartbroken, Jerry joins Tom on the tracks, and the whistle of an approaching train swells in the distance as the cartoon fades to black.
