Nada Lumiere and Billy are a French journalist and a rising New York City musician whose romance plays out with a raw, unstable current. The pair fight, break up, and reconnect again and again, held together by a mutual coolness about commitment. Billy’s temper and mood swings are part of the tension, while Nada often communicates with him through the videotapes she makes of herself, turning private moments into a looping, external conversation.

Their professional world complicates their personal one: Billy and his band sign with Jack, backed by Kellerman, for a broad management and record deal. But the arrangement teeters when Billy shirks a concert, putting both the contract and their future at risk. In the middle of this upheaval, Nada steps away for an extended break, claiming to be out of town on assignment, and she reconnects with an earlier lover and journalist colleague, Hoffritz, who has come to New York chasing a long-awaited interview with a legendary figure, Warhol.

While Nada is gone, Billy’s disillusionment with fame grows. He signs away his rights and royalties to Jack and starts seeing another woman, the unreliable aspiring documentarian named Lizzy. Nada’s absence becomes a test of their stubborn independence, as Hoffritz and the Warhol interview become focal points of the narrative. A crucial moment occurs at a birthday party thrown by [Jack], where [Lizzy] is present and Nada’s attraction to Billy is rekindled, pulling her back toward the tumultuous bond they share.

When Hoffritz finally settles in for the interview, Warhol remains elusive, offering few answers and playing coy with Hoffritz’s questions. Nada manages to coax Warhol into discussing film, vanity, and fame, a scene that crystallizes the film’s central themes. Nada reveals thoughts of leaving Europe with Hoffritz, prompting Billy to drive her to the airport with the plan to part ways. Yet as the terminal looms, Nada hesitates and tries to turn back, only to find Billy has already pulled away, and Hoffritz has boarded the plane in the other direction. The film closes on a note of ambiguity, suggesting that both Nada and Billy remain emotionally suspended, trapped by a shared blankness that neither can fully escape.
