Ricko returns from an eleven-month trip, stirring the town with a homecoming. Diane, Jared's mother, tries to tell him she has breast cancer, but he postpones the conversation as he focuses on organizing a welcome-home party for Ricko at the local surf club.

Rachel's father, a photographer who shoots provocative images, forbids his daughter from attending the party but allows her older brother Toby to go. The decision creates familial tension and foreshadows later conflicts among friends.

On the way to the party, Toby gives a ride to Tracy, Cherie, and two other girls. The casual ride sets the stage for the night's tragedies and the complex dynamics among the teens.

Inside the party, Jared flirts with Tracy, triggering a confrontation with Toby. Ricko steps in to defend Jared, but Jared stops the fight after Ricko strikes Toby, revealing competing loyalties among the group.

Tracy comforts Toby after the fight, and Jared leaves the party for the beach. There he sees Toby having consensual sex with Tracy, and then witnesses three of his male friends interrupting and raping her. He remains unable to intervene as Tracy calls for help.

That night, Rachel, who had sneaked out to attend the party, discovers Tracy's beaten corpse on the beach. The grim discovery triggers the investigation into Tracy's death and the fates of those involved.

Jared initially tells the police nothing about what he witnessed. He struggles between telling the truth and protecting his friends, and his silence strains his relationships with Rachel and his mother Diane.

Within a few days, Toby and the three other boys are arrested, while Jared remains silent. The police begin to piece together the events that led to Tracy's death.

On his way to the police station, Jared is confronted by Ricko, who confesses to killing Tracy but claims it was an accident. Ricko asks Jared to confirm his alibi in the name of mateship to protect them both.

Diane, who has not yet told Jared about her cancer, goes in to have surgery, adding emotional weight to the escalating turmoil in Jared's life and the investigation.

Jared tells the police that he was with Ricko. When he hints that Tracy's death might have been an accident, investigators show him photos of Tracy's battered body, forcing him to confront the brutal reality.

Jared confronts Ricko on the beach, and Ricko confesses that Tracy's death was not an accident. He explains he beat her to death after she bit him during an attempted sexual assault, revealing the murder's true nature.

As the confession unfolds, police arrive and Ricko tries to escape. Cornered on a cliff, he leaps to his death to avoid jail, while Jared shouts in protest at the outcome.

In the weeks that follow, Jared's life collapses. He moves out of Diane's house after learning of her illness and ends up living on the streets, grappling with guilt and isolation.

Later, Jared returns home, argues with Diane, and confesses that he witnessed Tracy's rape and could have saved her. That same day, he joins Diane and Cherie in cleaning graffiti from Tracy's grave, marking a somber act of atonement.
