Three young men, Scott, C.J. Longhammer and Robby, pull into a snowy Wisconsin roadhouse in search of a night’s escape. A bar fight erupts, and Scott is forced to come inside and bail out CJ and Robbie, then the trio heads toward Minnesota, hoping for a fresh start.
Within minutes, a large, menacing black 1957 Cadillac limousine begins stalking them, creeping up close and then backing off again. Later, they pick up Deputy Sheriff Charlie Harman, whose ’86 Chevrolet police cruiser has broken down on the roadside. The friendly, talkative presence in the backseat seems harmless at first, but the Cadillac continues to shadow them, and it even challenges Scott’s red Saab 900 to a drag race, trying repeatedly to wreck the Saab.
At a roadside cafe, they discover a message on the Saab’s windshield:
Your sin will find you.
Suspicion grows, and Scott decides to eject Charlie from the car, believing he is the reason they are being chased. The Cadillac reappears from hiding, and Charlie is apparently killed by a gunman in the front seat. As night falls, the trio’s precarious escape plan unfolds: the Saab overheats, forcing them to improvise, and a scuffle erupts among the men. CJ steps in to stop the fight, and then they spot a garage in the distance. They push the Saab toward it and attempt repairs, but CJ is soon kidnapped by the Cadillac’s occupants. A chase across a nearby frozen lake ensues, ending with the Saab’s engine giving out in the cold.
CJ is found tied to a tree, and the truth behind the nightmare comes to light: Charlie, a cruel and vindictive man whose death was faked by his brother Luther, the Cadillac’s driver, has been trying to identify the man his wife had been seeing at the roadhouse—and it’s Scott. Jeannine, his wife, taunts and distracts him, giving Scott, Robby and CJ a chance to break free.
An insanely enraged Charlie, now behind the wheel again, pursues them. When he corners Scott at the edge of a cliff, he charges. Jeannine appears at the last moment in front of Scott, forcing Charlie to veer away and sending the Cadillac crashing down the cliff and into the lake. Charlie and Luther are killed, and the burning car sinks as the group watches. The next morning, they finally cross the state line into Minnesota, leaving the night’s terror behind.
