The story centers on two deeply layered protagonists: Lazarus Redd, a devoted farmer and former blues musician, and Rae Doole, a young person grappling with sex addiction. Their emotional journeys are substantially affected by their turbulent pasts. For Lazarus, haunting memories of his wife's betrayal and a brother's deceit have left profound scars, creating an atmosphere rife with resentment and unresolved anger. Conversely, Rae finds herself spiraling into reckless behaviors, such as excessive substance use and promiscuity, particularly as her boyfriend, Ronnie Morgan, is deployed with the 196th Field Artillery Brigade of the Tennessee National Guard.
One harrowing evening, during a reckless binge, Rae falls victim to a brutal assault by Gill Morton, who callously leaves her for dead on the roadside while she lies in nothing but her undergarments and crop top.
The following morning, Lazarus discovers Rae's unconscious body and, compelled by a moral obligation, takes her to his farmhouse to help her recover. When Rae awakens, she is met with Lazarus's mix of concern and judgment, as he feels a spiritual duty to lead her away from what he perceives as her sinful ways, especially upon learning of her promiscuous actions.
