Between Two Worlds

A German air raid in London obliterates a car full of passengers on their way to the docks. Ann returns to their apartment to find Henry about to gas himself, and she joins him in death. Their act sets in motion the strange afterlife journey on which the rest of the story unfolds.

The couple finds themselves aboard a fog-shrouded ocean liner with the very people they believed were dead. Scrubby the steward urges them not to reveal they are dead, suggesting they must come to the realization themselves. The ship becomes a stage for the souls to confront their earthly lives.

As the passengers begin to interact, they reveal their earthly hopes: Reverend Duke longs to help others more actively, Pete Musick yearns to see his infant child, and Mrs. Midget cherishes a simple future of her own. These desires contrast with the quiet, unsettling fact that these are the souls now sharing eternity.

Thomas Prior overhears Henry and Ann arguing about their fate and, spurned by his wealth-seeking companion Maxine, reveals their truth to the other passengers. The revelation unsettles the group and foreshadows the forthcoming judgment.

Scrubby explains that the passengers will be judged by the Examiner. When he arrives, the Examiner is revealed to be the deceased Reverend Tim Thompson, a figure known to Duke in life, setting the stage for the judgments to come.

Duke is given another opportunity in Heaven as an Examiner-in-training, marking his shift from observer to guide in the judgment process. The role signals a new dynamic in how the others will be evaluated.

Mr. Lingley discovers that wealth and pressure cannot buy entry into Heaven. He must confront the suffering he caused others and will face consequences for his actions rather than bribe his way through.

Genevieve, a mercenary social climber, anticipates a castle-like Heaven, while her husband Benjamin is given the chance to be reunited with his old chums. Their relationship highlights the different paths souls may take beyond life.

Prior attempts to manipulate fate by rigging a deck of cards, but the Examiner's powers foil him. He learns that the afterlife will mirror his life but strip away his ability to deceive himself.

Mrs. Midget reveals she is Thomas Prior's mother, who gave him up as a child to give him a better chance in America. She offers to accompany him to Heaven, relinquishing her cottage to emphasize the possibility of reunion and selfless love.

Musick the sailor laments not seeing his family again, but receives comforting words that he will be reunited with them in time. The promise eases his troubled anticipation as he awaits his final verdict.

Henry Bergner learns that his suicide condemns him to remain on the ship for eternity, while Ann is granted entry to Heaven. Scrubby, likewise, is doomed to stay aboard for his own suicide, deepening the tragedy of their circumstances.

Ann refuses to abandon Henry's memory by simply going ashore, insisting on staying together. This stance adds tension to the proceedings as the Examiner weighs what fate should befall them all.

After being returned to their apartment, a bomb blast shatters a window, letting in fresh air. Henry revives Ann, and the couple are granted back the gift of life, breaking the grim cycle of death that had trapped them.

Henry and Ann celebrate being given back life, while the other souls' fates are resolved through the Examiner's judgments. The ship's spectral court disperses, leaving the living couple to a renewed chance at life together.
