Eternity

Larry, Miles Teller and Joan, Elizabeth Olsen, are an argumentative elderly couple married for 65 years who attend a family gender reveal party. Joan has terminal cancer, a secret they’ve kept from the family for years. At the gathering, Larry is shown a photo of Luke, Callum Turner, Joan’s first husband who died in the Korean War. Overwhelmed, Larry suddenly chokes on a pretzel and dies.

Larry awakens on a train as a young man, suddenly finding himself in the afterlife. He meets Anna, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, his assigned Afterlife Coordinator (AC), who explains that he must choose where to spend his Eternity. Anna clarifies that each Eternity has a distinct theme, but every decision is final and attempting to escape will banish a soul to the Void, a realm of endless darkness. Larry decides to await Joan in a place called the Junction.

Soon after, Joan succumbs to her cancer and arrives at the Junction as a young woman. She is reunited with Larry, but her AC Ryan arrives with Luke, who reveals he has been waiting at the Junction for 67 years. Prompted to decide whom to spend her Eternity with, an overwhelmed Joan confides in her recently deceased friend Karen, while Larry leans on Anna for guidance.

Because of her special circumstances, Joan is granted the chance to sample two Eternities—one with Larry and one with Luke—before making a final choice. She visits a mountain wilderness-inspired Eternity with Luke, where they wander through the Archives, a building in each Eternity that shows moments from a person’s life. Luke grows upset when he sees that Larry had proposed to Joan at the dock where he said goodbye before heading to war. Joan then journeys to a beach-inspired Eternity with Larry, who refuses to enter the Archives to revisit their life together.

Despite joyful dates with both husbands, Joan struggles to decide. Luke shows her a letter Larry had written before her death in which he stated his intention to wait for her in a future Eternity, a devotion she compares against Luke’s 67 years. She discusses her dilemma with Karen while sifting through information booths about different Eternities; meanwhile Luke and Larry begin to bond. Luke explains that souls revert to the age at which they were happiest—Luke’s happiest moment being when he and Joan might have started a family, and Larry’s when Joan was pregnant with their second child.

Unable to choose, Joan opts to spend her Eternity with Karen. Yet Larry realizes Joan has been wearing her hair long, a style she only wore during her first marriage, and he wants her to be truly happy. He urges her to choose Luke, while Anna admits she never picked one Eternity herself, because helping others made her happiest—though the spark faded, she thanks Larry for helping her feel renewed.

Joan and Luke begin their Eternity in the mountains, but as time passes, Joan grows restless and frequently returns to the Archives to relive memories with Larry. She discovers that the small, meaningful moments with Larry mattered far more than the fresh, carefree love she shared with Luke. When she decides she wants to spend Eternity with Larry, Luke tries to dissuade her, fearing she will be lost to the Void. The two share a quiet, fatalistic farewell, and Luke agrees to act as a decoy to let Joan slip through the Archives and exit that Eternity. Troubled memories from her past resurface as she finds her way back to the Junction.

In the Junction, Joan enlists Ryan and Anna’s help to hide and locate Larry. They discover that Larry has remained at the Junction, taking a bartending job (a nod to Luke’s former role) and choosing a life without an eternal separation from Joan. Larry and Joan finally reunite and enter a discontinued Eternity that closely resembles their earthly life. They settle into a second chance together, finding a sense of peace and a bittersweet closure to the lives they never fully lived.
