The Prince was transformed into a Beast because he showed cruelty to an aging beggar woman who came to his castle seeking warmth. Despite her warning not to judge by appearances, the Prince mocked her haggard appearance and coldly dismissed her. When she revealed herself to be an Enchantress, it was too late, she saw the emptiness in his heart and cursed him as punishment for his arrogance and lack of compassion.

Maurice was imprisoned after accidentally entering the Beast's castle grounds while lost in the forest. He picked a rose from the castle's garden as a gift for Belle, which enraged the Beast. Since the magical rose was the most precious thing to the Beast (it represented his chance at breaking the curse), he had Maurice locked in the dungeon as punishment for the theft.

Belle rode to the castle after her father's horse returned home without him, knowing something was wrong. When she found Maurice imprisoned, she bravely offered to take his place as a prisoner. She did this out of filial love and devotion, understanding that her father would likely die in the dungeon and wanting to save him. This act of sacrifice is what began her journey and eventual connection with the Beast.

The West Wing is a forbidden area of the castle that contains the magical rose, the very rose the Enchantress left the Beast. The rose determines whether the curse will be broken; if the last petal falls before the Beast finds true love, he will remain a Beast forever. The Beast keeps this area private and protected because it represents his greatest vulnerability and hope for redemption.

The curse can only be broken if the Beast learns to love another person and that person loves him in return before the last petal falls from the magical rose. Belle's heartfelt declaration of love for the Beast, even after seeing him at his most vulnerable and despite his monstrous form, proved that true love could see beyond appearances. This love broke the curse and restored everyone to their original forms.

The Beast's growing bond with Belle throughout the film foreshadows this moment, as their relationship evolves from fear to friendship to love.

Gaston's hatred for the Beast stems primarily from jealousy and wounded pride. When Belle rejected him, she was instead drawn to the Beast, which enraged Gaston. Additionally, Maurice had told the village about the Beast, and Gaston used this as an opportunity to rally the villagers against the 'monster', partly to appear heroic to Belle, but mostly to satisfy his desire for revenge and prove himself superior.

The castle's servants were cursed along with the Prince, they were transformed into household objects. Lumiere is a candelabra, Cogsworth is a clock, Mrs. Potts is a teapot, and many other objects retain their human consciousness. They help guide Belle and encourage her relationship with the Beast because they desperately want the curse broken so they can return to their human forms.

Belle discovers during her time at the castle that her mother died from the plague when Belle was very young. This revelation deepens her bond with the Beast, who also experienced loss and loneliness. The shared understanding of grief and abandonment strengthens their connection and helps Belle see the Beast's vulnerable, human side beneath his monstrous exterior.

The Enchantress gave the Beast a magical mirror as one of the only items that remained uncursed. The mirror can show the viewer any place in the world or any person. The Beast uses it to observe the outside world and, importantly, to check on Belle's wellbeing. This mirror represents the Beast's only connection to the world beyond his prison-like castle.

The magical rose given to the Beast by the Enchantress has petals that fall one by one over time. If the last petal falls before the Beast finds true love and breaks the curse, he will remain a Beast forever, as will his enchanted servants. There is no indication of what happens to them exactly, but they would be trapped in their object forms indefinitely while the Beast loses his humanity completely.

The ticking clock created by the falling petals creates tension throughout the film, building toward the climactic deadline.
