The last two surviving members of a French Foreign Legion detachment, who know each other only by the code names Smith and Brown, are condemned to rot in a grain pit in the scorching desert. As they face a slow, brutal end, the two soldiers realize they are not strangers after all; they are childhood friends, John Geste [Ralph Forbes] and Otis Madison [Lester Vail], mirroring a bond forged years earlier in England.
Their memories flood back in a stretch of vivid flashbacks: a young John and Otis growing up together, sharing adventures and loyalties that would bind them across continents. In one such memory, Otis returns to England only to discover that Isobel Landon [Loretta Young], the woman he loves, is betrothed to John. Though his heart aches, Otis vows to follow his friend to Africa and bring him home, boarding a journey that will test their fates and their faith in each other.
In Africa, Otis and his detachment are assigned to garrison a remote French fort amid sand and danger. Hardship breeds tension, and the unit’s cohesion shatters as mutiny festers among some of the legionnaires. Otis tightly refuses to participate in the uprising and tries to steer his comrades toward a peaceful resolution. When the revolt is crushed, authorities doubt his loyalty and cast him into a penal detail. There, he faces another accusation, and soon he and John are cast together into the same grain pit that frames the film’s opening, their destinies sealed in this sudden, brutal confinement.
Rescue comes in a moment of surprising mercy, as a nomadic band of Arabs happens upon the pit. Yet the two friends learn that their escape may come at a grave cost: the Arabs intend to use them as bait to lure the rest of the legion into a deadly trap. What tilts the balance is Zuleika [Leni Stengel], the Emir’s alluring companion known as “the Angel of Death.” Her attraction to Otis shifts the odds, and, after he agrees to marry her, she fills him in on an impending Arab assault against the nearby fort and helps them chart a route to safety. With her daring aid, Otis and John sprint toward the fort just in time to repel the attack, earning a hard-won measure of freedom.
But freedom comes with a new dilemma. Zuleika’s affection for Otis wanes as she transfers her heart to Major LeBaudy [Hale Hamilton], leaving Otis morally unburdened yet morally tested as he navigates his promised future. The pair ultimately make their way back to England, where the past gives way to a hopeful present.
Once home, John Geste moves to clear the path for happiness. He releases Isobel Landon from their betrothal, paving the way for Isobel [Loretta Young] and Otis to marry. The long journey that began in a desert pit—and stretched through England and Africa—culminates in a reinvigorated bond between two friends and a second chance at love on the home front.
