Nashim Hussani is a UN worker who passionately aids the Kurdish people of northern Iraq. She enters into a romantic relationship with Michael while providing him with critical insights about the corruption. Her firsthand knowledge of the suffering caused by the embezzlement helps Michael understand the human cost of the fraud.

Costa 'Pasha' Passaris is the Under-Secretary-General who oversees the Oil-for-Food Programme. While he takes Michael under his wing as a mentor, he is morally complex, potentially implicated in the corruption himself. Pasha attempts to show Michael the harsh realities of diplomacy, arguing that despite the embezzlement, $60 billion still reached those in need for food and medicine.

Pasha's mentorship reveals his belief in utilitarian diplomacy, accepting some corruption if meaningful aid still gets through.

Both Christina Dupre and Nashim Hussani are killed as the investigation intensifies and the stakes become life-threatening. Their deaths occur as part of the dangerous conspiracy surrounding the corruption, with those responsible eliminating anyone who threatens to expose the truth.

After experiencing the tragic losses of his allies and realizing the corruption persists even after the program's termination following the 2003 Coalition Invasion of Iraq, Michael becomes determined to bring justice. He meticulously gathers evidence and makes the courageous decision to approach The Wall Street Journal, believing this would be the most effective way to expose the truth to a wide audience.

Michael succeeds in exposing the corruption through The Wall Street Journal, achieving a significant victory for truth and accountability. However, the ending is bittersweet because it comes at a great personal cost, having lost Christina, Nashim, and his idealistic worldview. The system remains deeply flawed, and the victory is morally ambiguous rather than entirely triumphant, as the corruption represented a betrayal of humanitarian ideals.
