Rashad is a high school student in Atlanta who lives with his Uncle George and his younger brother Ant, helping out in George’s custodial business while navigating the last stretch of high school and chasing his own art that feels both possible and distant. Rashad’s art is a secret language he returns to after a day of work and routine, a thread of possibility that his current life rarely seems to honor.

His best friend Esquire has his eyes set on a different horizon: a prep school on the other side of town and a future at an Ivy League college. The path to that future, however, hinges on a single thing he believes will carry weight with admissions—a strong letter of recommendation from someone of high stature. This need sets Esquire on a course that pulls him away from Rashad’s orbit and toward people who might help him climb higher—even if the means are not always straightforward.

Into this tight-knit circle comes New-New, a girl with a shadowy past who appears around Rashad’s skating crew at the rink. Rashad finds himself drawn to her, and their attraction quickly blossoms into a quiet romance, underscored by curiosity and a shared sense of belonging in a neighborhood that feels both familiar and perilous.
