In the sweltering summer of 1978, the vibrant spirit of Chicago reverberates through the life of Xavier “X” Smith, a 16-year-old who discovers joy at the upscale Sweetwater rink. Here, alongside his close-knit friends—Junior, Boo, Naps, and “Mixed” Mike—Xavier dares to challenge the reigning champions, the Sweetwater Rollers, led by the formidable Sweetness. This brave decision is ignited by their aspiration to gain acceptance among the upper-crust crowd at the rink, who regard them with contempt. As the summer unfolds, Xavier’s heart flutters with nostalgia and rekindled feelings for his old crush, Naomi.

Yet, life at home is fraught with challenges following the death of his mother. His father, Curtis (played by Nick Cannon), is grappling with his grief and the responsibilities of caring for not only Xavier but also his sister, Sonya (played by Meagan Good).
