John J. is a seasoned hitman from New York City who finds himself on the brink of retirement. He shares a loving relationship with his girlfriend, played by Kathy Baker, who has a young daughter that he cherishes deeply. As someone living a double life, he keeps his criminal activities hidden from his family.
One fateful night, John’s life takes a dark turn when he commits murder in a nightclub, stabbing a man in line, and remarkably manages to escape without a trace. Shortly after, he meets with his boss to discuss a new contract that takes him all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Upon his arrival, John collaborates with individuals who have orchestrated the hit, focusing on a corrupt general. He initially urges that the job be completed within three days, but unforeseen circumstances push the timeline back to a few weeks. This unexpected delay provides John with the opportunity to explore the local culture, especially the enchanting world of tango. He becomes particularly infatuated with a mesmerizing dancer named Manuela, played by Luciana Pedraza.
Determined to learn the tango, he approaches her, although she expresses hesitance and suggests that her sister assist him instead. During a casual coffee date, an honest exchange unfolds where Manuela reveals she is single with a young daughter, while John confesses his complicated situation, voicing his belief that his age might hinder any romantic connection. However, Manuela reassures him that he indeed has a chance.
As their relationship blossoms, John immerses himself in the tango scene, growing closer to Manuela. Their evenings are filled with dancing and shared meals with her family, allowing him to momentarily forget about his grim professional life. However, John’s distrust of the men who hired him grows, prompting him to move ahead with the hit prematurely. He skillfully avoids capture from both the gangsters and the authorities.
With plans to meet Manuela and her daughter at a park, John’s escape from the chaos leaves him torn, ultimately prioritizing his safety over the burgeoning relationship. While on the flight back to New York, his thoughts drift to a vision of dancing the tango with Manuela.
Once in NYC, John reconnects with his girlfriend and her daughter, even showcasing some tango moves to the little girl. As the closing credits roll, a poignant voiceover from Manuela reveals she has sent John a video of new tango lessons, expressing her hope that he finds joy in them, leaving the audience with a bittersweet sense of longing and connection.
