Armored Car Robbery

Purvis recruits Benny McBride to lead the scheme, and Benny brings in Al Mapes and Ace Foster to complete the crew. The plan centers on the last pickup of the armored car in Los Angeles. Benny hopes the score will help him win back his wife Yvonne LeDoux, who is now involved with Purvis.

The robbery at Wrigley Field starts as planned, but a passing patrol car intervenes. Purvis shoots and kills one police officer, and the gang flees into the streets. This violent disruption marks the first major escalation of the plan.

Lieutenant Jim Cordell, partner of the dead officer, resolves to bring the killer to justice and throws himself into the case. He treats his rookie partner Danny Ryan with disdain, testing his readiness. The investigation tightens as clues point toward Purvis and the gang.

In the hail of gunfire, Benny is badly wounded and the four men switch to another getaway car. They push past a roadblock but manage to escape amid the chaos. The relentless pursuit sets up a tense cat-and-mouse chase.

Benny, demanding medical attention and his share of the loot, is shot dead by Purvis. Purvis preserves all the money for himself and hints at giving Benny's portion to Yvonne. The betrayal fragments the crew and raises the stakes of the chase.

Foster disposes of McBride's body and the second getaway car in the harbor, but the sinking vehicle is spotted by the police. The pursuing officers close in, and Foster is killed by the authorities as the trio attempts to escape by motorboat. Purvis continues to flee with all of the loot.

Mapes tries to meet Yvonne at the burlesque theater for a lead on Purvis. Waiting police intercept and arrest Mapes, and he tells them Purvis's identity. The capture tightens the noose around Purvis.

Ryan investigates undercover, posing as Mapes, while Yvonne has never met the real Mapes. Purvis alerts Yvonne to Ryan's true identity and captures him, shooting Ryan as Yvonne flees. The chase shifts toward a potential airport escape.

Ryan manages to inform Cordell that Purvis and Yvonne intend to depart the country by chartered airplane. Cordell mobilizes his team to intercept the couple at departure. The countdown to the final confrontation begins.

Cordell and his team corner the couple at the airport. A tense showdown unfolds as Purvis makes a last-ditch escape attempt. Purvis is killed by a landing plane as he tries to cross the runway, and Yvonne is captured.

With Purvis dead and the loot recovered, Ryan heals from his wound and is welcomed by Cordell as a worthy partner. The case closes with law and order restored and a new alliance formed between Ryan and the investigation team. The aftermath marks a fresh start for the detectives.
