As Axel drifts into a daydream, he is unexpectedly whisked away to a frigid Arctic expanse, where a solitary Eskimo proudly showcases his grand capture: a magnificent halibut. This vivid scene hints at events soon to unfold against the contrasting backdrop of Arizona, where Axel’s cousin Paul is organizing a family gathering featuring Uncle Leo’s grand wedding to a much younger bride. These celebratory events serve as a siren call for Axel, who begrudgingly leaves behind his fish-tagging responsibilities in New York City to dive into the family trade of selling Cadillacs.

Upon his arrival, Axel encounters two enigmatic women who will significantly alter his life’s path. Elaine, a visionary fueled by an unwavering passion for flight, and her stepdaughter Grace, who finds herself cloaked in a cloud of melancholy, yearning for self-sacrifice and even dreaming of reincarnating as a turtle. As the three navigate the dynamics of family dinners, Axel and Paul grapple with the ever-levitating chair that Grace occupies, symbolizing the transcendent challenges they are about to face.

Axel’s feelings for Elaine deepen, leading him into her ambitious quest to create a flying machine. However, their collaborative dream frequently faces setbacks due to the disruptive influence of Grace. As the others seek refuge indoors, Grace bravely ventures outside on her mission to release her cherished turtles, encouraging them to “Go play.” Meanwhile, Axel and Grace retreat upstairs for a gift-wrapping ritual, imbuing each present with distinct significance.

As the evening progresses, discussions shift to the theme of mortality, with each friend expressing their wishes regarding how they envision their final moments. With quiet determination, Grace ascends to the upper level, adorning herself in a flowing white shift and a veiled hat before slipping into the night, prompting Axel and Elaine to rush after her in a frantic effort to intervene.

In the wake of Grace’s tragic departure, the group is left to contend with the aftermath of her actions. Days later, Axel is compelled to visit Uncle Leo’s forlorn Cadillac showroom, where he collapses onto a glossy new model, surrounded by the soft purrs of a newly arrived kitten.

As the film concludes, Axel’s subconscious leads him to a whimsical realm where he and Uncle Leo don Eskimo attire amidst a lively frozen tundra.
