In the year 1942, amidst the chaos of World War II, intelligence officer Max Vatan receives a dangerous assignment. He is to travel to Casablanca, French Morocco, with the objective of assassinating the German ambassador.

During his mission, Max encounters Marianne Beausejour, a skilled French Resistance fighter. Forced to rely on each other, they devise a plan that involves posing as a married couple to infiltrate the ambassador's party.

As they prepare for the mission, Marianne teaches Max about the local customs that will help them maintain their facade. This includes the unusual tradition of husbands sleeping on the roof after intimacy, highlighting the risks they face.

Max's cover is nearly blown when he is recognized by a German officer, leading to a tense confrontation. He is forced to eliminate the threat to ensure the success of their mission and protect his identity.

Thanks to Marianne’s connections, they secure an invitation to the ambassador's party, where their assassination plot will be executed. The atmosphere is charged with tension as they prepare for the dangerous event.

Amidst a raging sandstorm, Max and Marianne share a passionate moment inside a car. Their bond deepens as they navigate the emotional complexities of love intertwined with their perilous mission.

The mission unfolds as planned, with Max and Marianne successfully carrying out the assassination. However, they face a nail-biting escape as danger closes in around them immediately after.

Post-mission, Max proposes to Marianne, inviting her to join him in London as his wife. This union is approved by his superior, Frank, who issues a warning about the fragility of wartime marriages.

Max and Marianne settle in Hampstead and welcome their daughter, Anna, into the world. This happy occasion is overshadowed by a German air raid occurring during the childbirth, reflecting the ongoing danger of their realities.

Fast forward to 1994, and the tranquility of Max’s life is disturbed when the Special Operations Executive informs him of suspicions regarding Marianne’s identity. They believe she has assumed the identity of someone else who died in France.

The SOE orders Max to plant false intelligence in his home, presenting him with a harrowing choice that could lead to his execution. This test strains his loyalty to both his duty and his family.

In a desperate bid for answers, Max reaches out to his old comrade Guy Sangster for help. Although Sangster is blind and unable to confirm details, he provides essential leads regarding Marianne’s past.

Tragedy hits when young pilot Adam Hunter, who is investigating Marianne's history, is killed before he can report back. This loss contributes to Max's growing doubts and fears of betrayal.

Max travels to France in a bold move to confront Paul Delamare, seeking the truth about Marianne's history. This results in dangerous encounters with local authorities and unsettling revelations.

Back in England, Marianne confesses her past as a spy while reaffirming her love for Max. With tensions mounting, she ultimately takes her own life, leaving Max to navigate the aftermath alone.

After the war, Max finally achieves his childhood dream of owning a ranch in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He dedicates his life to raising Anna while grappling with the enduring legacy of Marianne's true identity.
