What Happens at the End of Afwaah?

How Afwaah (2023) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The climax converges on the ruined fort where the false “love‑jihad” video has turned the whole town against Rahab. The security guards at the celebration refuse him entry, citing the viral rumor as proof that he is a threat. Vicky arrives with a truck carrying Nivi, hoping to flee, but a massive crowd—already inflamed by the same fabricated story—blocks the road. In a desperate bid to save himself, Nivi pretends to be the one who has run away with a Muslim man, kissing Vicky in front of the mob. The angry crowd, believing the rumor, turns on Vicky and drags him away, beating him to death. The mob’s fury, which Vicky himself had once stoked, finally consumes him.

Meanwhile, Chandan, still loyal to Vicky, tries to defend the truck but is confronted by the police inspector Sandeep Tomar. In the ensuing chaos Chandan is shot dead by Tomar, and Rahab, who had been stabbed by the henchman earlier, is left gravely wounded. He survives the attack, is taken to a hospital, and later returns home—now keeping his beard, a subtle sign that his identity and beliefs have shifted after the ordeal.

One month later, Nivi, grieving her fiancé’s death but determined to change the system that enabled it, steps into the political arena. She assumes leadership of her father’s party and prepares for the upcoming elections, suggesting that she will try to steer the movement away from hate. Riya, the policewoman previously entangled with Tomar, appears beside her, hinting at a new role within the force.

The final scenes show Rahab and his father arriving at their home, only to find it reduced to ashes—presumably destroyed by the same zealots who once spread the rumor. His father remarks that the house must be torn down before it can be rebuilt, and Rahab accepts the loss, helping to clear the rubble. The film ends with the implication that while the rumors destroyed lives, the survivors are left to rebuild what hatred tried to erase.
