Adrift

The film begins with Tami Oldham waking up aboard the damaged yacht Hazaña after being unconscious for an undefined duration. She quickly realizes that her situation is dire and that her partner Richard Sharp is missing.

As Tami searches the wrecked yacht, she remembers that Richard has been thrown overboard during a fierce hurricane after his safety harness broke. Overcome with despair, she comprehends her lonely predicament as there are no other boats or land in sight.

Five months before the storm, Tami arrives in Tahiti aboard the vessel Sofia and meets the charming Richard. Their initial dinner together aboard his yacht, the Mayaluga, is marked by Richard sharing his experiences with hallucinations while at sea.

Returning to the present, Tami discovers that all electronic devices on the Hazaña are inoperable due to water damage, preventing her from calling for help. In her desperation to find Richard, she spots him on a dinghy, clinging on to life.

Despite battling the turbulent sea, Tami courageously tries to steer the yacht toward Richard but is ultimately unsuccessful. She faces near-drowning herself, which compels her to take control of her fate and repair the yacht.

Using her resourcefulness, Tami manages to patch up the yacht by creating a makeshift sail and employing a pump to remove water from the cabin. Her determination is crucial as she fights against time and nature to keep herself afloat.

Tami succeeds in bringing Richard back on board, but he is severely injured with broken ribs and a shattered leg. While dealing with his wounds, she realizes she has also suffered a head injury in the chaos.

In a flashback, Tami and Richard meet Peter and Christine Crompton, the owners of the Hazaña. They persuade Richard to sail their yacht to San Diego, with Tami deciding to accompany him after he proposes with a handmade ring.

While at sea, Tami realizes that they have strayed from their planned route and she decides to adjust direction toward Hawaii. They encounter an ominous tanker, but despite Tami's distress signals, it fails to notice them.

Tami and Richard are alerted to the impending danger of Hurricane Raymond. Ignoring warnings, they attempt to maneuver around the storm but soon find themselves trapped in its violent eye as it changes course unexpectedly.

The hurricane unleashes its fury on the Hazaña, leading to catastrophic damages including a torn mainsail and a broken boom. In a moment of heart-wrenching despair, Richard professes his love for Tami as a rogue wave capsizes the yacht.

In the chaos of the storm, Tami sustains her head injury, and Richard is lost to the sea. Alone and devastated, she must confront the harsh reality of her situation and the loss of her partner.

After enduring days of isolation and battling despair, Tami finally spots islands and, using her binoculars, identifies a Japanese research vessel. She successfully signals them with flares, prompting them to change course and rescue her.

Once recovered from her injuries, Tami returns to Tahiti where she visits the Mayaluga. Overwhelmed by memories of Richard, she pays tribute to their love by releasing his engagement ring on a frangipani flower into the water.

The film concludes with the poignant realization that Richard was not just lost at sea, but that Tami, after surviving for 41 grueling days alone, continued to embrace sailing as part of her life. Her journey becomes a testament to resilience and love.
