Morganti purchases the dowdy hotel where Mrs. Hoyle has lived for 25 years, signaling a reformist era with his new leadership. He begins evicting many residents, reshaping the place to fit his image of order. Mrs. Hoyle, however, persuades him to spare her and Angela Brown, arguing that kindness can coexist with control.

Under her steady guidance, Morganti's men start abandoning their criminal ways and embracing a more disciplined code. Most members are willing to change, showing the power of her motherly presence. Only Harry Rogan remains resistant to the new order.

Eddie Slattery falls for Angela Brown and becomes increasingly entangled in the hotel’s new life. In a startling moment, he recognizes Mrs. Hoyle as his long-lost mother, though he keeps the discovery to himself.

Rogan engineers a robbery plan despite the reform tide, intending to strike the local grocery store the night of the grand opening. He tries to recruit Eddie as an accomplice, exploiting their past bond after Rogan saved Eddie's life.

The robbery goes ahead, but Eddie refuses to profit from the loot. The stolen money and valuables are hidden in a fur coat hanging in Mrs. Hoyle's closet, a secret tie that links Hoyle to the crime.

A night watchman from the grocery store helps identify Rogan, triggering Detective Pat Dennison's accusation that Morganti planned the robbery. Eddie learns of the police claim and both Rogan and Eddie attempt to flee.

Chase ensues through the streets as Rogan and Eddie try to escape. Rogan is shot and killed, and Eddie is knocked unconscious in the pursuit.
