In summer 1944, several gun crews defend a tiny bridgehead on the Dniester’s right bank. The story follows battalion commander Babin, lieutenant Motovilov, nurse Rita Tamashova, and the rank‑and‑file gunners—brave, timid, unscrupulous, unsung—as they experience a brief calm before the enemy launches another violent assault, leaving their fates uncertain.
