The film follows the daily combat life of a Soviet self‑propelled gun crew during the liberation of Right‑Bank Ukraine. Freshly graduated Junior Lieutenant Maleshkin commands an SU‑100 whose members are older and more experienced. His authority is constantly tested as he clashes and reconciles with his men, contends with an indifferent battery commander, and deals with mishaps—dirty uniforms, a misplaced grenade, sudden breakdowns—culminating in a massive battle against German forces.
