In January 1943 the German army, fearing an Allied invasion of the Balkans, launched a major offensive against the Yugoslav Partisans in western Bosnia. To escape the encirclement, the Partisan units and thousands of refugees had to cross the Neretva River, making its bridge the only viable route and the focal point of a battle for survival.
