A Close Shave

In this charming stop-motion adventure, Peter Sallis voices Wallace, who, with his trusty dog Gromit, runs a polite but busy window-cleaning business and brings a touch of whimsy to everyday life. Wallace soon finds himself falling for the wool shopkeeper Wendolene Ramsbottom, portrayed by Anne Reid, a meeting that sets off a ripple of affection, curiosity, and comic misadventure as the two navigate the quirks of small-town life and the oddities that come with Wallace’s overactive imagination.

Wallace’s gentle romance is complicated by Wendolene’s protective and scheming canine companion, Preston, who roams the shop with a sly purpose as he rustles sheep to stock the shop’s wool supply. The situation takes a surreal turn when a stray sheep wanders into Wallace’s home, prompting him to place the wool into his beloved Knit-o-Matic, a clever device that both shears sheep and knits the wool into cozy jumpers. Wallace christens the sheep Shaun, recognizing an almost magical spark in his new woolly friend.

The plot thickens as Preston makes off with the Knit-o-Matic blueprints, setting off a chain of misadventures. When Gromit investigates, Preston traps him and frames the faithful dog for the sheep rustling, leading to Gromit’s arrest while Wallace’s house fills with an ever-growing flock of sheep. The two friends—Wallace and Gromit—must improvise quick, clever plans to outwit their crafty foe and clear Gromit’s name. They go on the run, hiding out in the open fields as the sheep cluster around Wallace’s home, turning a simple window-cleaning business into a riotous sheep-infested escapade.

A high-speed chase ensues as Wallace and Gromit pursue Preston’s truck on their motorcycle. When Gromit’s sidecar becomes detached, he switches to an airplane mode, resuming the pursuit from the sky, a moment of comic ingenuity and daring. Wallace, meanwhile, ends up trapped inside the returning lorry, carrying Wendolene and the sheep toward a looming confrontation at Preston’s dog-food factory, where an enormous Knit-o-Matic looms over a cavernous wash basin.

Inside the factory, the captives are milled toward the fate of the wash basin, only Shaun’s nimble ingenuity can save them. Shaun flashes neon signs that reveal the factory’s location to Gromit, who storms the plant and confronts Preston in a tense showdown. In a pivotal turn, Shaun uses his wits to pull Preston into the Knit-o-Matic, stripping him of fur and exposing a startling truth.

Wendolene reveals the startling revelation that Preston is a robot created by her late inventor father, and his erratic behavior is the result of a malfunction rather than true malice. The Knit-o-Matic, acting on accidental misfires, dresses Preston in a sweater made from his own fur and sends him spiraling toward disaster. He inadvertently hits the control panel, threatening to send Wallace, Wendolene, and Shaun into the mincing machine. In a dramatic, swift act of courage, Shaun pushes Preston into the machine, crushing him and ending his robotic menace.

With Preston finally neutralized, Gromit is exonerated, and Wallace helps rebuild Preston as a harmless, remote-controlled dog—an odd, endearing compromise that fits the oddball world they inhabit. Yet the victory is tempered by a gentle melancholy as Wendolene decides to leave; she reveals she is allergic to cheese, a fact that casts a bittersweet note over Wallace’s hopeful heart. When Wallace seeks solace in a block of cheese to lift his spirits, he discovers Shaun has eaten it all, leaving him with a mix of humor and a hint of wistfulness that lingers long after the credits roll.
