What Happens in A Grand Day Out: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of A Grand Day Out (1989) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

While deciding on where to go for their bank holiday, the cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his dog Gromit find their fridge empty. Knowing that the Moon is made of cheese, they build a rocket and fly up to the lunar surface. After landing, they set up a small picnic and sample portions of the Moon, taking in the quiet, otherworldly scenery.

They soon encounter a coin-operated robot; Wallace inserts a coin, but nothing happens at first. After he and Gromit leave, the robot comes to life and gathers the dirty plates left at the picnic spot. The robot discovers a skiing magazine and longs to travel to Earth to ski. It repairs a broken patch of lunar landscape, issues a parking ticket for the rocket, and grows irritated by a leaking oil trail from the craft.

The robot quietly creeps up on Wallace and raises a truncheon. But the coin Wallace inserted has run out, and the robot freezes in place. Wallace takes the truncheon as a souvenir, inserts another coin, and prepares to depart with Gromit.

Back to life, the robot follows them, and Wallace and Gromit retreat into the rocket. In the ensuing chaos, the robot cuts into the fuselage with a can opener and accidentally ignites some fuel. A blast throws the robot away, while Wallace and Gromit lift off toward Earth.

From the debris, the robot fashions twisted pieces of rocket fuselage into skis and begins gliding over the Moon’s slopes, waving goodbye to Wallace and Gromit as they return home.

A Grand Day Out Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about A Grand Day Out (1989): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does the robot freeze when the coin runs out?

The robot on the Moon is powered entirely by coins inserted by visitors. When Wallace inserts a coin, it activates the robot's systems, allowing it to move and perform tasks. Once the coin's power is depleted, the robot immediately stops functioning and freezes in place, just as it did when it was about to attack Wallace with the truncheon. This coin-operated mechanism is what controls all of the robot's actions.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Wallace inserts a coin but nothing seems to happen, hinting at the delayed activation after they leave.

  • coin-operated robot
  • moon robot
  • power mechanism
  • wallace and gromit
Q2

How does the robot learn to ski?

After Wallace and Gromit leave the Moon, the robot discovers a skiing magazine that was left behind at the picnic site. Looking through the magazine, the robot becomes fascinated with the idea of traveling to Earth to ski. This discovery sparks its obsession with skiing and motivates its increasingly desperate attempts to get to Earth.

Foreshadowing: The skiing magazine is visible among the items left at the picnic spot before the robot awakens.

  • skiing magazine
  • robot dreams
  • earth travel
  • moon caretaker
Q3

Why does the robot become angry at Wallace and Gromit?

The robot's anger stems from several frustrations. First, it is territorial and views itself as the Moon's sole caretaker, resentful of intruders. Second, Wallace and Gromit leave behind trash from their picnic, which the robot must clean up. Third, the rocket leaks oil onto the lunar surface, which the robot finds polluting. Fourth, the robot desperately wants to visit Earth to ski, but these visitors keep coming and leaving without taking it with them. These grievances accumulate and turn the robot hostile.

Foreshadowing: The robot's initial task of gathering dirty plates establishes its role as a cleanliness enforcer.

  • moon caretaker
  • robot hostility
  • moon pollution
  • lunar robot
Q4

What causes the explosion that sends Wallace and Gromit home?

As Wallace and Gromit attempt to leave, the robot pursues them and tries to climb the rocket ladder. When that fails, the robot uses a can opener to cut into the rocket's fuselage, intending to force its way inside. However, this action accidentally punctures the fuel line, igniting the fuel and causing an explosion that blasts the robot away. The explosion provides the chaotic opportunity Wallace and Gromit need to lift off and return to Earth.

Foreshadowing: The robot's desperation to reach Earth escalates as it watches them prepare to leave.

  • rocket explosion
  • fuel ignition
  • escape from moon
  • robot pursuit
Q5

Why does Wallace take the robot's truncheon?

When the robot freezes due to the expired coin, Wallace takes the truncheon as a quirky souvenir of their Moon encounter. This is characteristic of Wallace's eccentric personality, he often collects unusual mementos from his adventures. The truncheon serves as both a trophy and a protective weapon, though it becomes more of a humorous keepsake than a practical tool.

Foreshadowing: The robot raises the truncheon just before freezing, drawing attention to the object.

  • truncheon souvenir
  • wallace collectibles
  • moon memento
  • comedic element
Q6

How does the robot end up skiing on the moon at the end?

After the explosion blasts the robot away and Wallace and Gromit lift off, the robot is left alone on the Moon. However, the explosion also tears off pieces of the rocket fuselage that land nearby. The robot salvages these twisted, buckled metal pieces and fashions them into makeshift skis. Using these improvised skis, the robot is finally able to ski on the Moon's surface, achieving its dream in an unexpected way, by bringing skiing to itself rather than traveling to Earth.

Foreshadowing: The explosion damages the rocket fuselage, scattering debris across the lunar surface.

  • robot skiing
  • moon skis
  • rocket debris
  • happy ending
Q7

Why does the robot issue a parking ticket for the rocket?

The robot, serving as the Moon's official caretaker, treats the rocket as a vehicle parked illegally on the lunar surface. Issuing a parking ticket reflects the robot's rigid adherence to rules and regulations, even in the absurd context of an uninhabited moon. This comedic action highlights the robot's bureaucratic nature and adds another layer of humor to the conflict.

Foreshadowing: The robot's initial awakening involves it performing caretaker duties like cleaning up litter.

  • parking ticket
  • moon rules
  • robot bureaucrat
  • comedic satire
Q8

What was the robot's problem with the oil leak from the rocket?

The rocket's engine develops a leaking oil trail that drips onto the pristine lunar surface. As the Moon's caretaker, the robot is deeply concerned with maintaining the cleanliness of its domain. The oil leak represents pollution and damage to the Moon's terrain, which the robot finds intolerable. This irritation contributes to the robot's growing hostility toward Wallace and Gromit and their spacecraft.

Foreshadowing: The oil leak is mentioned as one of the robot's ongoing frustrations during its observations of the rocket.

  • oil leak
  • moon contamination
  • rocket damage
  • robot caretaker duties
Q9

How does Wallace's coin keep the robot active?

The Moon's robot is designed to operate only when a coin is inserted into its mechanism. This coin-operated system controls all of the robot's functions, from basic movement to more complex actions. When Wallace inserts a fresh coin, the robot springs to life and can perform tasks. When the coin runs out, the robot immediately stops, as evidenced by its freeze during the attempted attack and its reactivation when Wallace inserts another coin for departure.

Foreshadowing: Wallace initially inserts a coin with no immediate visible result, suggesting delayed activation.

  • coin activation
  • robot power source
  • moon machine
  • mechanical caretaker
Q10

What happens to the robot after Wallace and Gromit leave?

After Wallace and Gromit successfully lift off and return to Earth, the robot remains alone on the Moon. However, instead of being stranded in despair, the robot repurposes the explosion debris to create skis and begins skiing across the Moon's surface. The film ends with the robot waving goodbye to Wallace and Gromit as they head home, suggesting the robot has found its own form of happiness by bringing its dream of skiing to the Moon itself.

Foreshadowing: The robot's obsession with skiing and the explosion that scatters rocket parts set up this resolution.

  • robot fate
  • left on moon
  • skiing ending
  • happy conclusion
