An elderly Nenets woman in a teepee on Russia’s Yamal Peninsula recounts to the blind young Ilne how she was betrothed to the deity Num. In Nenets tradition a child may be married to the holiest being, Num, before or after birth. The lonely, solitary Numd’ Syarda, whose name means ‘tied to Num,’ entertains Ilne with the tale of becoming one of the few chosen.
