The Wooden Man’s Bride is set in the 1920s, during China’s Warlord Era, and unfolds as a restrained romance between two people from vastly different social worlds. A young woman, known only as “Young Mistress” Lan Wang is en route to meet her future husband when her procession is ambushed by sword-wielding bandits in the desert. A devoted servant, Kui, gives chase as the kidnapers drag the young woman back to their lair. When he arrives, the bandits’ leader, Chief Tang Mingjun Kao, is impressed by Kui’s boldness and grants him permission to retrieve the Young Mistress.
News swiftly reaches the Young Mistress’s fiancé that she has been seized. In a desperate bid to save her, the would‑be savior accidentally triggers an explosion that ends his own life. Upon the Young Mistress’s return, she faces the imperious mother of the deceased groom, Madame Liu Wang Yumei, who subjects her to a set of arcane tests of purity designed to prove her worthiness to wed the dead fiancé. Having passed these punitive rites, the Young Mistress is compelled to marry the wooden figure that stands in for her late husband—the titular wooden man.
Trapped in a life she did not choose, the Young Mistress struggles to adapt to her new existence at the mill. She finds a fragile comfort in a growing friendship with Kui, the very man who first saved her, and that bond slowly deepens into a forbidden love. When their affair is discovered, Kui is banished from the mill, and Madame Liu orders the Young Mistress’s legs broken to prevent any escape. Yet Kui remains determined to rescue her, returning to the bandits where the old chief lies dead and Kui rises as the new leader.
A year passes, and Kui returns with the bandits to claim the Young Mistress. He grants Madame Liu a merciful end by letting her hang herself, then destroys the house by fire and carries the Young Mistress away with him, setting them on a perilous, uncertain path together.
