In a remote valley village, a harsh tradition dictates that anyone who reaches seventy must abandon the community and ascend a mountain to die, lest the family be shamed. Orin, now sixty‑nine, knows her turn is imminent this winter. Before she departs, she feels compelled to secure a marriage for her eldest son, Tatsuhei, hoping the love she fosters will endure beyond the cruel custom.
